Prep Instructions
You’ll need to follow specific instructions to prepare for your colonoscopy exam. The reason is that in order for your doctor to be able to detect any issues during the colonoscopy, you first need to clean out your bowel. This includes adjusting your diet in the days leading up to the exam and taking the laxative preparation prescribed by your doctor at specific time intervals. Depending on the medication prescribed, you will need to follow slightly different steps.
Colon Preparation
Please discontinue the use of aspirin products, arthritis medication and iron tablets for one week before the examination. Tylenol may be used. For the best possible examination, the colon must be completely empty of waste material, so it is important that you follow the circled instructions set out below very carefully.
Endoscopy Preparation
For the best possible examination, the stomach must be completely empty, so you should have nothing to eat or drink, including water, and oral medications after midnight the night before the exam, unless otherwise directed by your physician.
Do not take any aspirin or arthritis medications for seven days prior to the examination.
Prep for Upper Endoscopy:
The procedure you are going to have requires that you have nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the night before your examination. It is extremely important that you follow these instructions. Food or liquid in the stomach during the procedure could be dangerous. If you were to vomit you could possibly aspirate the liquids into your lungs. If you forget and eat or drink something please tell the nurse so that she may reschedule your procedure.
If you are on medication for high blood pressure or a heart condition please take your medication on the day of the procedure. Try to take your medications 2 hours before your scheduled time. Drink just enough water to swallow the pills.
If you are going to be sedated you must have someone to drive you home. You will not be able to use public transportation. Your family or friends may bring you to the office and leave. They may leave a number or we can call when you are ready to go home. Your visit will be as long as 2 to 3 hours for your examination.
Prep for Upper Endoscopy/Afternoon Procedure:
For patients with an afternoon appointment, you may continue to consume clear liquids up to 4 hours prior to your procedure arrival time. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING 4 HOURS BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE.
If you are on medications for high blood pressure or heart disease please take your medication on the day of the procedure. If you normally take these medications in the morning please take them at your regular time.
